Athletics Ontario U14, U16, U18 Championship Review

Over the past weekend, the Athletics Ontario U14, U16 and U18 Championships took place at the University of Windsor Stadium, in Windsor, Ontario. The event took place over the two days and featured over 900 athletes and 1,900 entries! The athletes represented themselves and their clubs tremendously well, displaying all the hard work they have been putting in over the course of the outdoor season. Although both days were wet and windy, it didn’t stop the athletes from bringing their A game.

Three records were broken this weekend! Lexi Stanat of St. Thomas Legion T.C. set a new provincial record in the U13 Girls Discus throw, with a throw of 28.71m, she destroyed the old record of 24.42m! Billie Martin broke the Girls U17 provincial record in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 55.25m. Lastly, the Mississauga Olympians Track and Field Athletics Association U16 Boys team broke the provincial 4x100m relay record! Their time of 43.48 seconds blew away the old record of 44.90 seconds! Congratulations to all the new record holders!

Izzy Goudros went four for four this weekend taking home four gold medals in the U16 category. She competed in the Girls 200m dash, 200 Hurdles, 300m dash and 80m Hurdles. Of the Brampton Track Club, Jillian Catton also finished the competition with hardware as she took home 2 gold medals in the Girl’s Triple and Long jump and a bronze medal in the girls 200m! Rianna Smuk of Toronto Olympic Club dominated the U14 Girl’s distance events taking away two gold medals in both the 1200m and 2000m. Also in the distance field, Emma Pegg of Windsor Legion T.F.C. additionally came away with two gold medals, this time in the U16 Girls 1200m and 800m. Lastly, Charlize Fraser dominated in the U14 girls category, winning three gold after competing in the 80m dash, 150m dash, and the Shot Put.

On the boy’s side, Ryan Jacklin from Saugeen T.F.C had three remarkable performances allowing him to come away with three gold medals, in the U18 Boys Javelin, Hammer and Discus Throws. On the track, Jalon and Jadon Rose had a tremendous weekend, not only contributing to the new record for the U16 Boys 4x100m, but they each took home an additional gold medal! Jalon earned his gold medal by running 11.23 seconds in the U16 Boys 100m, and Jadon earned his with his time of 22.76 seconds in the U16 Boys 200m.

Athletics Canada Names 33 Ontario Athletes to NACAC Canadian Team

On July 10th, Athletics Canada announced the 58 Canadian athletes who have been selected to represent Canada at the 2018 NACAC Championships, that will take place August 10-12 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The Canadian team is comprised of 29 women, 15 of which are from Ontario, and 29 men, 18 of which are from Ontario. A special congratulations to Ontario coach, Glenroy Gilbert for being named at the head coach of the Canadian Team. The Canadian athletes will compete in a total of 39 events over the course of the 3-day competition.

Head Coach Glenroy Gilbert and select athletes shared statements about the amazing opportunity, and what it means to compete in front of a home crowd.

Gilbert stated “athletes and coaches alike know how special it is to compete at home. Being able to showcase your talent in front of a home crowd is an athlete’s dream.” He added that “we have selected a group that features a mix of veterans and newcomers to the national team program, which will provide our athletes an international platform to practice our ‘performance on demand’ approach.”

Aaron Brown, 2018 national Champion sprinter, from Phoenix Athletics shared, “I remember being at the Pan American Games, I saw a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, including people that I grew up with. It’s fun to be able to run in a world-class meet in front of family and friends. That’s what I’m looking forward to the most, but I also want to come out with a win”.

Brittany Crew, a now three-time national champion, of SISU Throws Club stated “I missed out on the 2015 Pan American Games. I sprained my ankle, so I didn’t hit the qualification mark before the deadline. I ended up going to FISU that year, which was a blessing in disguise, but I missed out on the opportunity to compete at home. I’m excited that the NACAC Championships are in Toronto this year. My mom can’t make it out to a lot of meets, especially international meets, because she can’t travel. She will be there in Toronto cheering me on; that’s going to be special for the two of us.”

Good luck to all Athletics Ontario members, as well as all of Team Canada, on your journey leading up to the NACAC Championships.

Canadian Track and Field Championships Recap

As the Canadian Track and Field Championships have now come to an end, it was an incredible week! To even recapture this event seems nearly impossible, there were so many tremendous performances, and all of our athletes deserve a huge round of applause for their hard work!

A huge shout out to our double Gold medalists, Aaron Brown and Crystal Emmanuel, the King and Queen of sprints! A few other important athletes to recognize include, but are not limited to; Shawn Barber, who cleared 5.75m (a new Championship record) in the Senior Men’s Pole Vault, winning himself a gold medal in the event; Rebecca Herman, who earned a gold medal in the U20 Women’s Shot Put with a throw of 14.11m, and silver in the U20 Women’s Discus Throw with a toss of 37.85m; and lastly, Austin Smeenk of Cruisers Sports for the Physically Disabled, swept the competition to take home gold in the Men’s Para Wheelchair 100m, 200m and 400m!

Canadian Track and Field Championships: Day Four Is Done

As day four concludes, there are only two more days of competition at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. Today consisted of both preliminaries and finals, concluding with the Men’s and Women’s Senior 100m Finals, which were evidently events to get excited about! Aaron Brown took the win for the men in 10.158 seconds, just barely outreaching competitor Bismark Boateng, who takes home silver in 10.159 seconds. Andre De Grasse rounded out the podium, coming in third with a time of 10.20 seconds. On the Women’s side, Flying Angels Academy had a strong showing, as 3 of their sprinters finished in the top 4. Crystal Emmanuel took the win in 11.35 seconds, followed by Leya Buchanan, who placed second with a time of 11.47 seconds and third place was achieved by Phylicia George, who ran 11.627 seconds.

Austin Smeenk had another day of strong performances as he won gold in the 100m, 200m, and 400m Men’s Wheelchair Para events. Jessica Lewis finished second in the Women’s 200m Para Wheelchair Dash and fourth in the 800m Para Wheelchair Dash.

Out in the field, the athletes looked strong! Rebecca Herman threw 3 meters further than the second place athlete in the U20 Women’s Shot Put, throwing 14.11m. In the Men’s Long Jump, Jared Kerr, having jumped over 8 meters this year previously, took the gold with a jump of 7.80m, and Damian Warner took second jumping 7.72m. Jillian Weir took first place in the Women’s Senior Hammer Throw, throwing 68.86m, which was 2 meters further than her next competitor.

Coming out of the day, we have a number of athletes now who have qualified to compete in the NACAC Championships in Toronto. Congratulations to Aaron Brown, Crystal Emmanuel, Jared Kerr, Jillian Weir, Tim Nedow earning qualifications today. They are joining Andrea Seccafien, Mohammed Ahmed, and Matt Hughes, who qualified last night.

More preliminaries and finals will continue tomorrow morning, beginning at 10 A.M. ET. And as always, for the full schedule and results, go to Athletics Canada’s website: athletics.ca/ottawa2018.

Canadian Track and Field Championships: Three Days Down

As day four approaches, and qualifying rounds are underway, and the Combined Event athletes have completed their portion of the competition. On Tuesday and Wednesday the Ontario U18, U20, and Senior heptathletes and decathletes worked hard to compete against athletes from other provinces, as well as other countries.

Athletics Ontario member Mariya Suchoplas, finished second in the Women’s U18 Heptathlon with a points total of 3,935. Although Mariya came second overall, she scored the most points in the 100m hurdles, 200m dash, and long jump! Congratulations Mariya on a hard fought second place! In the Women’s U20 heptathlon, Athletics Ontario member Katelin Beaudry came fourth overall, but finished 3rd amongst the Canadian athletes. Katelin finished with a total of 4,683 points and consistently scored among the top points in all 5 events.

In the Senior heptathlon, Dallyssa Huggins had a strong showing. As Canadian Nationals doubled as the Pan American Championships, athletes came from all over North America to compete. Dallyssa finished with a top ten performance overall and placed 4th Nationally with a score of 4,946 points. Despite Dallyssa’s young age, her performance this weekend shows she can compete with the best. Canadian National Team Member, Georgia Ellenwood placed first overall with a score of 6,026 points.

On the Men’s side, Owen McDonald of London Western T.F.C. finished first in the Men’s U18 Decathlon. Owen finished with a score of 5,446 points just holding off Bailey Couch from Woodstock Legion who placed second with a score of 5,444 points. Coming in third place was Bolton Pole Vault member Tyler Denes, who finished with 5,282 points. Additionally, London Western T.F.C. member, Christopher Caruso, finished 5th with a total of 5,162 points.

The Men’s U20 Decathlon drew in competitors from all over North America as well. Yariel Soto from Puerto Rico won with a total of 6,997 points. Following closely behind the international competitor was Athletic Ontario Member Joshua Mather who finished 4th overall with a total of 6,351 points, and third in the Canadian portion.

The Men’s Senior Decathlon was nothing shy of spectacular! Similarly to the Women’s Heptathlon, the Men’s Decathlon doubled as both Canadian Nationals as well as the Pan American Cup Championships. Athletes from the United States took the top three spots, but Christopher Robertson of Canada took the Canadian title. Athletics Ontario member Telvin Tavernier took third Nationally and 8th overall.

Congratulations to all of Athletics Ontario Heptathlon and Decathlon athletes. Athletics Ontario is very proud of the tremendous effort you have displayed over the last two days.

In the International Para Challenge, our athletes have done great! To name a few, Isaiah Christophe, Austin Smeenk, Brett Babcock, Jessica Lewis, Renee Foessel, Kevin Strybosch and so many others have represented Ontario so well! Run Ottawa’s Distance Night was a huge success, despite the windy, rainy conditions. Athletes including Matt Hughes, Andrea Seccafien, and Mohammed Ahmed all qualified for the NACAC Championships in Toronto, on August 10-12, 2018 by finishing first in their respective events. Several other Ontario athletes had top finishes amongst their events, including Abbey Yuhasz, Josh Kellier, Katelyn Ayers, Andrew Davies, Justyn Knight, and Sasha Gollish.

Looking ahead, we had athletes qualify for the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m, as well as the Men’s Para Seated Discus Throw! We have high expectations for our athletes across these events. Brandon Letts had the fastest qualifying time in the 100m, a speedy 10.53s! This and much more is what we’re looking forward to from our athletes in the remainder of the Championships!
